Dawson City in Canada's Yukon Territory is known for the unusual Sourtoe Cocktail, a drink featuring a mummified human toe. This unique cocktail has become a rite of passage for visitors and locals alike.
The tradition involves a shot of whisky with a dehydrated, salt-preserved toe. Participants must adhere to strict rules, notably avoiding chewing or swallowing the toe, with a significant $2,500 fine for ingestion. The cocktail's origins trace back to the 1920s when two brothers preserved a frostbitten toe. Decades later, in the early 1970s, Dawson resident Dick Stevenson found the toe and transformed it into a unique cocktail garnish.
Over 140,000 people have joined the Sourtoe Cocktail Club by consuming the drink. The town of Dawson City, a former gold mining hub, embraces this quirky tradition as part of its rugged frontier culture. Today, around 25 toes are kept and used in rotation, donated by individuals or even arriving unexpectedly in the mail, ensuring the continuation of this bizarre yet celebrated custom.
