Sisters Welcome Babies Hours Apart in 'Surreal' Births
14 Jun
Summary
- Two sisters gave birth within five hours of each other on the same hospital ward.
- The mothers, Abi and Jessica, had their sons Freddie and Alfie within hours on May 20.
- They described the shared experience as 'special and quite surreal', like a sleepover.

Sisters Abi, 26, and Jessica, 28, shared an extraordinary experience when they welcomed their sons just five hours apart. Both mothers delivered their babies on May 20 at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon. Their midwife arranged for them to be placed on beds next to each other on the same ward, a situation the sisters likened to a "sleepover."
Abi was being induced while Jessica unexpectedly went into labour, and they were reunited in the corridor. "We were joking all the way through our pregnancy we would give birth on the same day," Jessica remarked. Abi's due date was May 23, and Jessica's was May 26, but both babies arrived early.
Having given birth, Abi was able to offer encouragement to her sister during labour. For Abi, a mother to three-year-old Millie, and Jessica, mother to two-year-old Charlie, this second experience of childbirth was different, largely due to managing toddlers. However, the shared experience of pregnancy and birth proved invaluable, combating the feelings of isolation that can accompany it.
Freddie and Alfie, born on May 20, were three weeks old on Wednesday. The mothers are planning joint birthday parties for their sons as they grow, anticipating they will share a sibling-like bond.
