- App uses Gale-Shapley algorithm to match singles aged 21 to 35.
- Singapore faces demographic crisis with birth rates at a 60-year low.
Singapore is tackling its critical demographic crisis with the introduction of FirstDate, a new government-backed dating application. Launched as a pilot program, this app is exclusively available to public servants aged between 21 and 35. Its core feature is the utilization of the Gale-Shapley Stable Marriage algorithm, designed to move beyond superficial connections and foster more meaningful relationships.
FirstDate aims to mitigate Singapore's record-low fertility rates, which have contributed to a significant population decline. In 2025, the country recorded fewer than 30,000 births, the lowest in six decades. The total fertility rate (TFR) fell to 0.87 children per woman, substantially below the 2.1 replacement level. The app seeks to encourage dating among a key demographic group to help reverse these worrying trends.
The application requires users to complete detailed profiles, enabling the algorithm to suggest compatible matches one at a time. Once paired, couples have a three-day window to accept a date. The platform also offers 'date quests' to help break the ice. This is not the government's first foray into matchmaking, with a similar agency established in 1984.
