Matt Huddleston, a 21-year-old who relocated to Shrewsbury from Derby two years ago, has expressed gratitude for the Empty Chairs support group, crediting them with boosting his confidence and expanding his social network. Huddleston moved to Shrewsbury at 18 for a degree apprenticeship, underestimating the challenges of living away from home and experiencing isolation.
Established by Dean Perryman to address loneliness, stemming from the loss of his best friend, the Empty Chairs group has facilitated more than 850 events globally. The Shrewsbury branch, run by Cameron Beddows, meets every Wednesday at the Admiral Benbow pub. Beddows, who also experienced periods of loneliness, aims to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.
Officially, about one in four adults in the UK report experiencing loneliness either often, sometimes, or always, according to the Office for National Statistics. Huddleston described his initial apprehension about attending his first Empty Chairs event, but he was ready for new connections. The group is inclusive, welcoming individuals aged 18 to 80 from all backgrounds and genders, creating a judgment-free safe space.
