Shirley Raines: A Legacy of Dignity for All

Shirley Raines, known affectionately as Ms. Shirley, founded the nonprofit Beauty 2 The Streetz, an organization dedicated to providing grooming and personal care to underserved populations. Her profound commitment stemmed from the tragic loss of her son, channeling her grief into service for the community, particularly in Skid Row and Las Vegas. Ms. Raines's impactful work, focused on restoring dignity and self-value, earned her national recognition, including CNN's Hero of the Year in 2021.

Following her passing earlier this year, the mission of Beauty 2 The Streetz continues uninterrupted, providing essential resources to those in need. Ms. Shirley's legacy of service and her dedication to ensuring marginalized communities, including the LGBTQIA+, homeless, and Black and Brown individuals, are seen and valued has led to her posthumous recognition. LA Pride has named her their Legacy Grand Marshal, celebrating her spirit of empowerment and pride, embodied in their 'Rise with Pride' theme.

Her colleague, Marcos Perez-Ogilvie, highlighted Ms. Shirley's unique approach, emphasizing her belief in calling everyone 'Kings' and 'Queens' to instill a sense of inherent dignity. Despite her reluctance to accept awards, preferring to focus on the work, Ms. Shirley's unwavering dedication and the lasting impact of her efforts are now being celebrated, ensuring her vision continues to inspire.
