Madhusmita Jena, a mother of two, is preparing to compete in the Manchester Marathon this weekend with the goal of setting a new Guinness World Record. She aims to complete the 26.2-mile race in under three hours and 50 minutes, which would surpass the existing record by five minutes.
Jena's endeavor transcends athletic achievement; it serves as a powerful statement to inspire women from diverse ethnic backgrounds to embrace running in whatever attire they feel most comfortable. She emphasizes the importance of prioritizing personal health and mental well-being, even amidst busy schedules.
With years of running experience, including multiple marathons and ultramarathons, Jena has previously run several races in a saree. Her fastest time in traditional attire was 4 hours and 18 minutes at the Berlin Marathon in 2024. She has adapted her draping technique for optimal comfort and performance.
Beyond the personal challenge, Jena is also raising funds for Heaton School, where she teaches. The money will go towards an eye-gaze device to assist children with severe learning difficulties, aiming to improve their ability to interact with technology.
