In Sapporo's Susukino entertainment district, Cafe & Bar Opal provides a safe and inclusive haven for LGBTQ+ individuals and diverse groups. The bar is a sanctuary, free from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, and sex characteristics. It welcomes patrons with developmental disorders, those who cross-dress, and enthusiasts of unique fashion styles.
"Asami," the 55-year-old owner, leads a significant dual life. By day, they conform to their legal gender in a corporate setting. After work, Asami transforms, dressing in feminine attire to serve as the bar's "mama." This transition began after a challenging period of societal pressure and a personal realization during the 2018 eastern Iburi earthquake, which prompted Asami to embrace their true self.
Initially catering to sexual minorities, Asami expanded the bar's mission to support individuals facing developmental disorders, depression, and other life difficulties. Taking over the tenancy in October of the previous year, Asami renamed it "Opal," symbolizing diversity and multifaceted identities. The bar upholds 10 "promises" to ensure everyone feels respected and safe, creating a space for genuine self-expression.
Described as a "field hospital," Opal offers a refuge for those wounded by societal judgments. It provides a place for casual conversation and connection, helping patrons relax and feel at ease. The bar also offers job training and hosts events for individuals with developmental disorders, further solidifying its role as a crucial community support hub.
