Developed by the North Pennines national landscape team, the walk encompasses significant landmarks and highlights the region's rich history and status as a UNESCO Global Geopark. It aims to draw attention to this area, often overlooked between Hadrian's Wall and the Yorkshire Dales.
The route is structured into 14 legs, suitable for day trips or a longer journey, and is designed to integrate with public transport. It begins and concludes in Appleby-in-Westmorland, traversing County Durham, Cumbria, and Northumberland, with a section extending into the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
