"She always talks about 'life is a practice,'" he says, a philosophy that he has applied to his own marriage. "Relationships require that. Communication is not always easy for either side, but you just have to learn to believe you can problem-solve together."

As the Howards look back on their five decades of wedded bliss, the director remains grateful for the bond they have built and continues to nurture. "It ain't perfect. Never is. Still isn't," he admits. "But when you do practice that process, it works."
