Rishikesh's Iconic Laxman Jhula Bridge Replaced by Stunning Glass Suspension Crossing

As of October 2025, the legendary Laxman Jhula bridge in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand has been replaced by a new architectural marvel - the Bajrang Setu. The iconic Laxman Jhula, which had been a major tourist attraction since its construction in 1929, was shut down in 2019 due to safety concerns.

The new Bajrang Setu is a 132.5-meter-long glass suspension bridge spanning the Ganges River. Featuring a two-way lane for light vehicles and pedestrian walkways made of 3.5-inch thick toughened glass panels, the bridge promises to offer travelers a unique and stunning experience. The design of the bridge incorporates elements inspired by the Kedarnath Temple, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage.

According to the executive engineer of the Public Works Department's Narendra Nagar Division, the construction of Bajrang Setu is nearly complete, with only the installation of the glass panels on the pedestrian walkway remaining. The bridge is expected to be handed over to the administration early next year, by December 2025.

Safety has been the top priority in the construction of Bajrang Setu, with the glass panels designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. However, a recent incident in October 2025, where a 31-year-old software engineer fell into the Ganges while entering a restricted construction zone, has raised concerns about the importance of following safety measures for visitors.
