Bus Pass Hero: 840 Miles for Hospice Care

Alan Beckett, a 68-year-old former taxi driver, recently completed an remarkable 840-mile bus journey to raise money for Havens Hospices. Departing from Southend-on-Sea on June 1, he arrived at John o' Groats in Scotland four days later, having utilized 22 different bus services. Beckett's adventure, which raised £1,720 for the hospice, included overnight stays in B&Bs and camping in the wild. He appreciated the beautiful scenery and the interactions with local people encountered during his travels.

The journey was not without its challenges. Weather delays in Newcastle led to a fortunate encounter with a stranger who arranged free accommodation. Beckett also discovered his bus pass was not valid in Scotland, incurring an additional £56 for tickets. Despite these twists, he found the Scottish buses to be quite plush. Beckett was inspired to undertake the trip by his past experiences and his daughter's employment at Fair Havens.
