The United States Department of State has introduced a streamlined online system for passport renewals, significantly simplifying a process that was once cumbersome. This new digital platform allows eligible U.S. citizens to renew their passports in approximately 10 minutes, eliminating the need for paper applications, mailed photos, or in-person visits to a post office. The online renewal is available at opr.travel.state.gov and requires a digital photo and a credit or debit card for payment. The processing time remains four to six weeks for routine service, consistent with mail-in renewals. Expedited service is still available for those needing their passports sooner than six to eight weeks, for an additional fee. Eligibility for online renewal includes being at least 25 years old, residing in the U.S., and having a current passport issued within the last 15 years that is valid for 10 years. Restrictions apply, such as the inability to change personal information or renew special issuance passports. Both passport books and cards can be renewed through this online portal. The cost for a standard passport book renewal is $130, a passport card is $30, and renewing both is $160. Express mail options are also available for an additional fee. Applicants can track their status online after submission.
