In an exceptionally rare event, a County Tyrone farmer has welcomed quintuplet calves, a feat with odds estimated in the millions to one. The farmer, Noel Moore, who has farmed in Killen for five decades, described the birth as the most surprising event of his career. He noticed the cow was unusually heavy and, after contacting the vet, witnessed the delivery of five calves.
While the two male and three female calves are healthy and thriving, their mother sadly succumbed to the immense physical strain of carrying and delivering quintuplets. A veterinary expert highlighted that such pregnancies are high-risk, often leading to smaller calves and significant stress on the mother due to nutrient demands.
This remarkable occurrence has brought the local farmer unexpected attention, with similar rare births documented only a handful of times globally. The farmer expressed disbelief at the event, considering it a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience in his extensive farming career.
