Full-Body Ram Tattoos: A Fading Devotion?
23 Mar
Summary
- Ramnamis tattoo 'Ram' on their bodies as a form of devotion.
- Younger generations are opting out of full-body tattoos.
- Community population has significantly dwindled from its peak.

The Ramnami community, historically known for tattooing the name of Ram on their bodies, is experiencing a significant population decline. Once a community of hundreds of thousands, their numbers have dwindled to between 20,000 and 100,000 today. This reduction is largely due to younger generations choosing not to undergo the extensive tattooing, influenced by social pressures, the pursuit of higher education, and concerns about professional discrimination.
Despite the decrease in full-body tattoos, with only a few individuals now fully adorned, the core tenets of the Ramnami faith persist. The community's foundational principles of equality, abstaining from vices like alcohol and tobacco, and daily devotion to 'Ram' as a formless, omnipresent deity continue to be upheld by younger members. Annual festivals, like the Bhajan Mela, and unique temples, such as the idol-less Jayostambh, remain central to their spiritual practices.
