Mind Over Metal: Rajkot Drivers Prioritize Swag Over Safety
16 Apr
Summary
- 72.4% of Rajkot drivers view breaking rules as 'smartness' or 'swag'.
- External fear, not internal discipline, drives compliance among drivers.
- Psychological solutions like sensitivity training are proposed.

A recent psychological survey conducted in Rajkot by Saurashtra University offers stark insights into driving behaviors, suggesting that mindset, not infrastructure, is the primary cause of traffic problems. The study, involving 1,456 participants, found a significant social distortion where 72.4% of respondents believe violating traffic rules is now perceived as a mark of "smartness" or "swag."
Emotional instability appears to fuel risky driving, with over 37% admitting impatience and 32.7% experiencing immediate anger at slower vehicles. Competitive overtaking, cited by 33.7%, indicates an ego-driven approach to driving. Furthermore, 62.8% admitted they would disregard traffic signals if no cameras were present, underscoring a reliance on external deterrence over internal discipline.
The survey also highlighted social arrogance, with 60% believing drivers of expensive vehicles disregard those in smaller ones. A significant 68.4% of respondents emphasized the need for a change in mentality over stricter laws. Researchers recommend psychological interventions, including sensitivity training before license issuance and instilling traffic discipline in school curricula, as crucial steps toward improving road safety and culture.
