As of November 12th, 2025, a former RAF member, Dave Pearson, has taken on a new role with Citizens Advice in Grimsby to support veterans transitioning to civilian life. Pearson, who served in the RAF for over 22 years, is now the armed forces lead, tasked with helping people leaving the forces with a range of issues.
These include managing money and debt, finding suitable housing, securing employment, and navigating disability benefits. Pearson says he has "experienced some of the challenges the veterans are facing" and "knows what they're going through." This firsthand experience allows him to provide tailored assistance to those leaving the military.
According to North East Lincolnshire Council, there are around 7,000 veterans living in the borough. Pearson notes that the transition to civilian life can be quite difficult, as the qualifications and skills gained in the forces often do not translate directly to the civilian world. He aims to help veterans with training, education, and finding stable and affordable housing.
Mental health is another primary concern, with some veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Pearson's new role is being supported by a £32,000 grant from the council's Household Support Fund, allowing him to work alongside the charity NEL4Heroes to provide comprehensive assistance to the local veteran community.
