A 105-year-old Royal Air Force veteran, Jack Waterfield, celebrated his milestone birthday with a surprise party. Born on May 18, 1921, in Kingsthorpe, Northampton, Waterfield began his military service in 1941. The party, held in his hometown, was arranged by parish councillor and veteran Pete Spink.
Attendees at the celebration included schoolchildren, cadets, and other veterans. Waterfield, who has lived in Duston, recalled his wartime service, which took him to North Africa, Malta, and Gibraltar as part of a special mission. After the war, he successfully ran a shoe business for several decades.
Party organizer Pete Spink described the event as moving, noting Waterfield's surprise upon entering the Duston Community Centre, expecting a small gathering with friends but instead finding over 50 people. Retired Air Vice-Marshal Andrew White also attended, praising Waterfield as a "wonderful example" of a man who endured significant hardship during World War II and adjusted to civilian life afterward.
