For close to two months, two San Francisco roommates were disturbed by persistent scratching sounds emanating from within their apartment walls. These noises intensified over time, frequently disrupting their sleep and causing significant distress. The source of the disturbance was revealed when a mother raccoon, residing in the wall cavity, gave birth to a litter of pups.
As the raccoon family grew, they created an opening in the wall, entering one of the roommate's bedrooms. The situation escalated, prompting the roommates to seek assistance from their property managers. Despite an initial attempt to deter the animals, the noises worsened, leading the tenants to fear a breach. Their fears were realized when the raccoons broke through into a bedroom.
The roommates ultimately decided to vacate the apartment in mid-June. Before their departure, an exterminator removed the raccoon family. Tragically, the mother raccoon became trapped and died during the removal. In response to the ordeal, the property managers compensated the tenants approximately $4,600 for reduced rent and moving costs.
