Unwanted Rabbits Flood Rescue After Easter

Rabbit Rescue North West has sounded an alarm following a significant post-Easter influx of abandoned pet rabbits. The charity recently took in eleven rabbits in just a few days, a situation that has left them overwhelmed.

This incident has led the charity to issue a strong advisory for prospective pet owners. They stress the paramount importance of conducting thorough research into rabbit care before bringing one home. The organization actively encourages individuals to consider adoption from reputable rescue centers rather than purchasing new animals.

According to trustees, rescue centers ensure adopted rabbits are properly neutered, vaccinated, and health-checked. Furthermore, they meticulously match animals with appropriate homes, verifying that suitable housing and conditions are in place. A common oversight, they note, is the substantial space requirements for rabbits, needing a minimum of 60 square feet of predator-proof enclosure.

Crucially, rabbits are social creatures and require the companionship of their own kind. Neglecting these essential needs can lead to welfare issues, underscoring the charity's plea for responsible pet ownership.
