The Queen's Enchanting Wendy House: A Gift That Endures

In 1932, a six-year-old Princess Elizabeth received an extraordinary gift from the people of Wales: a fully functional Wendy House. This miniature dwelling was complete with a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom equipped with modern amenities like hot and cold running water, electricity, and a heated towel rail.

Despite a fire damaging the house during transit, it was swiftly repaired and reconstructed at Windsor Great Park in time for the young princess's birthday. Archive photos from 1932 depict Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret enjoying their playtime in the cottage, with later images showing them visiting as adults.

Princess Beatrice, the Queen's granddaughter, shared that the house remains a cherished family treat, undergoing a year-long renovation process. She highlighted the monarch's specific requests for small floral designs on the interior fabrics, reflecting the house's intimate scale. The Queen herself continues to visit the playhouse, which now serves as a joy for her great-grandchildren.

This unique gift, titled 'The Little House' and designed by architect Edmund Willmott, measured 24-feet long and five-feet high. It was officially gifted to the Queen as a symbol of affection, distinct from gifts typically refused by the Royal Family for security reasons. The house's ownership remains with the Queen, to be passed down through generations, and it is currently located on the grounds of the Royal Lodge of Windsor.
