Queen Elizabeth II's Candid Derby Day Out

A candid moment from 1991 at the Epsom Derby revealed a more personal side of the late Queen Elizabeth II. During the event, she humorously corrected her mother, the Queen Mother, who mistook her teary eyes for emotion.

The monarch clarified that her eyes were streaming because she had been using binoculars. This relatable exchange was captured in the 1992 BBC documentary "Elizabeth R: A Year in the Life of the Queen."

Despite initial disappointment with her horse placing fourth, the Queen experienced joy later when a horse she backed won. Her winnings from a sweepstake horse named Generous amounted to a modest £16.

Queen Elizabeth II's deep affection for horses began in childhood, with her first pony gifted by her grandfather, King George V. At her passing in 2022, she owned over 100 thoroughbred racehorses, with her most significant win being Estimate in the 2013 Ascot Gold Cup.

Her successor, King Charles, inherited this multi-million-pound racing empire and began selling some horses in October 2022, including 14 of the late Queen's racehorses for approximately £1 million.

Race manager John Warren noted the Queen's daily commitment, including reading The Racing Post each morning. Broadcaster Clare Balding also shared that the Queen cherished racing as a passion she could share with the public, enjoying visits to stables and interactions with grooms. Balding further revealed that the Queen found horse racing appealing because it offered a rare respite from constant public scrutiny.
