Pune's Kasba Peth: A Living Museum of Old India

Pune's historic Kasba Peth is stepping back in time this Ganeshotsav, recreating 'Punavdi,' the city's ancient settlement. The Shri Hanuman Mandir Pratishthan has eschewed mythological themes for its centenary celebration, opting instead for a life-size tableau that vividly brings to life the social and cultural fabric of old Pune. This immersive experience spans an approximate 150 ft by 250 ft area, meticulously detailing traditional village entrances, chavdis, wada-style lanes, river ghats, and a temple.

The tableau further illustrates Pune's historical occupations and community life, including representations of the tamhan, shimpi, and kumbhar communities. Organizers aim to educate younger generations about Pune's origins as Punavdi and the significance of its wada culture and traditional community structures. The project received enthusiastic cooperation from local residents and establishments, preserving the area's existing character.

Beyond the visual spectacle, the mandal champions traditional Ganeshotsav celebrations, having avoided DJ-based festivities for over a decade. They also maintain traditional music and procession practices. The Rs 35 lakh tableau is funded through mandal contributions and advertisers. Their year-round initiatives include educational and healthcare support, further highlighting a commitment to community welfare.
