Pune Cyclists Face Roadblocks: Study Reveals Top 3 Deterrents

Obstructions on cycling tracks, including parked vehicles and vendor encroachment, are the primary deterrent for 56% of cyclists in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Nagpur. This finding comes from a study by the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP).
Conducted between July and September 2025, the survey identified a lack of strict enforcement of cycling infrastructure and rules as the second biggest concern for cyclists at 54%, followed by speeding vehicles at 49%.
The study also highlighted gender differences, with 59% of female respondents using bicycles for daily commutes compared to 41% of males. Respondents under 18 years old primarily use cycles for school travel, with 40% citing a lack of shade as a deterrent.
