As World Bicycle Day passes, Pune's electric mobility startup VIR Mobility is calling for improved cycling infrastructure. CEO Ravi Kumar stated that current cycle tracks in Pune are often discontinuous, hindering their effectiveness. He stressed the need for continuous, user-centric corridors connecting homes, workplaces, and transit points, with strict enforcement against encroachments and regular maintenance.
Kumar emphasized the immediate priority of linking Pune's expanding Metro network with cycling infrastructure. He suggested that every Metro station should feature safe, continuous cycling access to nearby residential and commercial areas, including dedicated parking and bicycle-friendly station designs.
Pune developed a comprehensive cycling plan around 2017-18, but much of it remains unimplemented. VIR Mobility urges the Pune Municipal Corporation and stakeholders to actively incentivize cycling and launch public awareness campaigns to address citizen hesitation due to unsafe road conditions and lack of continuous infrastructure.
Community-led initiatives have shown promise, with organizers and cycling communities demonstrating positive engagement. When issues like damaged tracks are raised, corrective measures have often been taken, offering an encouraging sign for the future of cycling in Pune.
