This trend holds true at the Hoosier Mama Pie Company in Chicago, where owner Paula Haney notes that while apple pie is the top seller for most of the year, pumpkin takes the lead at Thanksgiving. Haney explains that around 90% of the nation's canned pumpkin is grown in Illinois, giving Chicagoans a sense of local pride in every slice of pumpkin pie.

Beyond the Thanksgiving season, pumpkin maintains a loyal following, with Haney revealing that customers frequently request pumpkin-based treats like muffins, bread, and scones throughout the year. The versatility of pumpkin has also led to creative mashups, such as pecan-pumpkin pie and caramel apple variations, becoming increasingly popular.

While some may argue that apple pie is the quintessential American dessert, it seems that for a brief but significant period each year, pumpkin pie reigns supreme in the hearts and stomachs of holiday revelers across the country.
