Miracle find: Prosthetic leg returned after 10 months at sea
11 Feb
Summary
- A stranger found a lost prosthetic leg 10 months after it vanished in the sea.
- The titanium prosthetic leg was discovered on a beach 12 miles from where it was lost.
- The owner, Brenda Ogden, had lost the leg while sea swimming in April of the previous year.

Disabled swimmer Brenda Ogden has been reunited with her prosthetic leg, lost 10 months ago. The £3,000 custom-made titanium limb was discovered by Lizzie Forbes during a beach walk near Atwick, North Yorkshire. Forbes found the prosthetic amongst rocks, 12 miles south of where Ogden had lost it.
Ogden, 69, lost her left prosthetic leg below the knee last April while sea swimming off Bridlington. A large wave dislodged the brand new, waterproof leg, and it was swept away into the sea. Despite extensive searches by Ogden and her friends, the limb was not recovered.
A fundraising appeal for a replacement swim leg by the Flamborough Flippers group raised £800, but this was insufficient for a new one, leaving Ogden unable to swim. Forbes, a semi-professional fossil hunter, posted a picture of the found leg on social media, which eventually reached Ogden.
