Princess Isabella Forgoes Pay for Military Service

Princess Isabella of Denmark began an 11-month military service on August 3, reporting to Antvorskov Barracks. She is the first female member of the Danish royal family to undergo full military conscription, following in the path of her elder brother, Crown Prince Christian. The 19-year-old royal arrived at the Guard Hussar Regiment shortly after graduating high school.

Distinguishing herself from other recruits, Princess Isabella has opted to decline the standard salary and daily allowances typically provided to conscripts. She will instead depend on financial assistance from her parents. This choice comes as Denmark enhances its military capabilities in response to escalating European security concerns, including the conflict in Ukraine.

Denmark expanded its mandatory military service program to include women in 2024, extending the service period from four months to eleven months. Approximately 1,600 young individuals commenced this new extended service this week. Some recruits will be deployed to Greenland later this month to support operational duties.
