Queen's Grandson Trades HRH for Rural Studies

James, Earl of Wessex, the youngest grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth, is reportedly set to forgo his royal titles as an adult. The 18-year-old son of Prince Edward and Sophie, Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, has been accepted into the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. He will commence his studies in Rural Land & Property Management this autumn without taking a gap year.

This decision to not use his birthright titles, such as HRH, aligns with his older sister, Lady Louise, who similarly chose not to adopt royal styling. Their parents, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, had previously indicated in 2020 that their children would likely need to earn their own living, influencing the decision to forego HRH titles. Sophie stated it was "highly unlikely" they would use them.

Before starting university, James spent the summer working as a farmhand on King Charles' Sandringham estate, gaining practical experience. This move away from traditional royal expectations echoes choices made by other royal family members, including Princess Anne, who raised her children Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall without royal titles, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who pursued private careers despite receiving titles at birth.
