Pope Gets Custom Ford Explorer Hybrid
7 Mar
Summary
- Pope received a custom Ford Explorer Platinum hybrid.
- The SUV was built in Chicago, Pope's hometown.
- It won't replace the official, bulletproof Popemobile.

Pope Leo XIV was presented with a custom Ford Explorer Platinum hybrid SUV on February 28. Ford CEO Jim Farley personally delivered the vehicle, which was manufactured in Chicago, the pontiff's hometown. This unique Explorer boasts personalized details, including Chicago flag seat tags and skyline stitching, celebrating the Pope's origins.
The luxury-spec, all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain is not available for standard US dealership models. Ford confirmed this new Explorer will not serve as the official Popemobile, as it lacks the necessary protective features like bulletproof glass. The Popemobile remains a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, with the German automaker having previously supplied similar vehicles to the Vatican.
