Summary
- A polar bear enjoyed an 8-12 inch snowfall at the Saint Louis Zoo.
- Kallu, a 3-year-old polar bear, played with toys in the snow and pool.
- Veterinarians cautioned pet owners about extreme cold dangers for animals.

The Saint Louis Zoo experienced a significant winter event as a historic snowstorm brought between 8 and 12 inches of snow and well below-freezing temperatures to the area on January 25th. During this severe weather, a 3-year-old polar bear named Kallu was observed enthusiastically embracing the conditions.
Security camera footage captured Kallu playing with a toy ball in his enclosure, diving into the pool, and rolling around on the snow-covered rocks. The zoo itself was closed on January 25th and 26th to ensure the safety of staff and allow for snow removal.
Amidst Kallu's winter fun, veterinarians and animal welfare groups issued urgent advisories to pet owners. They stressed the critical need for extra precautions due to the extreme cold, highlighting that animals, even those with thick fur, are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. The risks also include worsening of existing health conditions and exposure to hazards like de-icing chemicals.
