Inclusion Advocate Phil Hocking Shortlisted for Award

Phil Hocking, 38, has been recognized with a national award nomination for his exceptional contributions to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Hocking, who grew up in Wolverhampton and has Caribbean heritage, was shortlisted for an honour at the Ethnicity Awards in the exceptional inclusion category.

His efforts include bringing Windrush events into the workplace, expanding a Black colleague network, and actively participating in Black History Month events. Organizers highlighted Hocking as an inclusion advocate, speaker, and mentor who strengthens representation, belonging, and opportunities for ethnic minority colleagues.

Hocking stated that his non-traditional career path makes the nomination particularly meaningful. He began working in a bank in 2022 and became a 'next generation talent consultant' last year, focusing on educating young people about finance careers and promoting social mobility.

His work significantly focuses on ensuring individuals feel represented and included, regardless of their background, drawing from his own lived experiences. Hocking shared an instance where discussions around hair equality led to barbers and braiders being invited to the bank, addressing cultural nuances often overlooked.

He also noted that individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds often struggle to see themselves in corporate settings. Hocking's visible impact is evident as he now sees people from diverse backgrounds in bank branches, confirming the success of his initiatives.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 22nd in London.
