Pet Toys Pose Deadly Risk: Report Reveals Dangers
30 Sep
Summary
- 83% of toy complaints involved emergency vet treatment.
- One-quarter of reported cases resulted in fatalities.
- Industry lacks required testing, recalls, and injury reporting.

A recent report by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS) has brought attention to the alarming risks associated with pet toys. The findings indicate that these enrichment products are a leading cause of injury and death among pets, based on owner complaints and veterinary records. Approximately 83% of toy-related incidents reported to CPS required emergency veterinary intervention for gastrointestinal blockages. Alarmingly, around one-quarter of these cases proved fatal.
This situation is exacerbated by the fact that the pet toy industry, a multi-billion dollar market, currently has no mandatory testing, recall procedures, or injury reporting requirements. Veterinary professionals confirm that swallowed toys and their components are common issues, leading to obstructions, choking, and other severe health problems. String or ribbon attachments also pose a significant hazard, especially to cats.
Owners are advised that a pet's behavior is a stronger indicator of risk than breed, with destructive chewers and curious animals being more susceptible. Medical conditions can also increase ingestion risks. To ensure safety, experts recommend choosing toys appropriate for a pet's size and chewing habits, supervising playtime, and regularly inspecting toys for damage. Damaged toys should be discarded immediately, and string toys should be stored safely when not in use. Immediate veterinary consultation is advised if ingestion is suspected, emphasizing that while enrichment is vital, toy safety requires ongoing owner vigilance.
