Beloved Nutria Pet Dies of Cancer After Viral Fame

Condolences are being shared following the death of Neuty, a pet nutria who achieved significant public attention. Neuty, who was found as a baby on Christmas Eve 2020 in Louisiana, became a beloved pet of the Lacoste family. His unique status as a domesticated nutria, an animal considered invasive, led to a public battle with wildlife authorities.

Initially, Louisiana's wildlife department sought to confiscate Neuty. However, a public outcry, including a petition with over 17,000 signatures, led authorities to permit Neuty to stay with his owners. This victory propelled Neuty to national recognition.

Neuty's fame grew exponentially, with appearances on cable news and a strong social media presence. He also became a local celebrity, frequently seen at community events, fairs, and farmers' markets, known for his calm demeanor around people.

Tragically, Neuty was diagnosed with an inoperable cancerous tumor in March. Despite receiving treatment, he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, May 9, 2026. His owners expressed their deep devastation and stated that Neuty brought them immense joy for 5.5 years.
