14 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Project connects residents of Port Medway, Nova Scotia and Medway, England.
- Initiated to combat loneliness through handwritten letters.
- Pairings are made based on personal interests and preferences.

A heartwarming initiative is fostering connections between two communities separated by the Atlantic Ocean: Port Medway, Nova Scotia, and Medway, England. The "Two Medways Penpal Project," launched in late November, aims to combat loneliness by reviving the art of handwritten letter writing. Participants are paired based on shared interests, creating a tangible link between strangers.
Initiated by Audra Williams, who runs a local business in Port Medway, the project was inspired by a local article about the UK's Medway. Despite vast differences in population and character—a small maritime village versus a large industrial urban area—both share the Medway River and a shipbuilding heritage. The project taps into a desire for slower connections and community engagement.
With 68 participants signed up in less than a month, the project has quickly gained traction. The initiative highlights the enduring value of personal correspondence in an increasingly digital world. Even mayors are participating, exchanging postcards, underscoring the project's success in strengthening community pride and fostering intercontinental relationships.
