Mirror-Loving Peacock Evicted From Brisbane Home
3 Nov
Summary
- A peacock named Hex entered a Brisbane home and admired his reflection.
- Rescuers were called to remove the bird, which was later released.
- Hex has been visiting local properties, drawn to mirrors.
A fully grown peacock, identified as Hex, caused a stir last week after breaking into a Brisbane home and becoming entranced by his reflection in a bathroom mirror. The homeowners returned from an evening coffee to find the bird admiring himself, prompting alarm and a call to wildlife rescuers.
Rescuers successfully wrangled Hex and released him into nearby bushland. Since then, the peacock has been making appearances at other local properties, demonstrating a continued fascination with mirrors. This behavior has led to speculation about his motivations.
His owner, Elliot Ross, confirmed the bird was Hex due to his distinctive plumage and noted this was the first time Hex had strayed significantly. Ross suggested Hex might be seeking a female companion, as his usual female companion remained home. Urban ecologist Darryl Jones posited that Hex might be experiencing loneliness rather than actively seeking a mate, though he acknowledged peacocks are not highly intelligent.
Efforts are ongoing to reunite Hex with Ross, with one resident strategically placing a mirror in a shed to encourage Hex's presence. The situation highlights the unusual interactions between urban wildlife and domestic environments.
