Phone Booths Connect Boomers and Gen Z
23 Mar
Summary
- A unique payphone project connects Boomers and Gen Z.
- The initiative aims to combat loneliness in both demographics.
- Conversations may shift the brain from stress to bonding.

A distinctive payphone project, dubbed "Call a Boomer," has been installed in Boston, inviting passersby to "call a Boomer." Simultaneously, a similar phone in Reno, Nevada, prompts seniors to "Call a Zoomer." This initiative by Matter Neuroscience, a company focused on mapping "biomarkers of happiness," seeks to bridge the generational divide.
The project targets older adults and younger adults, identified as the loneliest age groups. Its core objective is to foster intergenerational connections and demonstrate that human interdependence is key to happiness. By encouraging meaningful dialogues across age, lifestyle, and political differences, the initiative aims to reduce feelings of isolation.
Matter Neuroscience hypothesizes that these conversations can positively impact brain chemistry, promoting the release of 'feel-good' neurotransmitters called cannabinoids over the stress hormone cortisol. This experiment follows a previous initiative that connected individuals from ideologically opposed cities to find common ground.
The team is currently collecting audio recordings from these intergenerational calls, seeking scientific evidence that simple human connections can enhance mental well-being. Future projects are planned to continue capturing public attention and encouraging self-discovery.
