In a recent Sunday service, Rev. Phillipa Phaneuf, 51, revealed to her congregation at North Chili United Methodist Church that she is transgender and embracing her authentic self. Phaneuf shared that this personal journey has led to profound happiness she hadn't experienced in years, aiming to make the church a more inclusive space.
Phaneuf explained that while her voice may change slightly and she will use she/her pronouns, the core mission of the church and her commitment to ministry remain. She noted the full support of the United Methodist Church hierarchy, including the bishop and district superintendent, facilitating a smooth announcement.
Despite the warm reception from her religious community, Phaneuf disclosed that her parents do not support her transition, having chosen their personal beliefs over family support. Nevertheless, Phaneuf is proceeding with hormone replacement therapy, emphasizing the importance of living authentically, even amidst familial challenges.
