Paralyzed Man Climbs Everest with Tech Legs

Jamie McAnsh, once an active runner, faced a life-altering neurological spasm in 2014 that left him partially paralyzed from the waist down. Despite a degenerative condition and intense pain, he has become a symbol of determination, embracing advanced mobility aids to conquer new heights. In 2022, he trekked to Everest Base Camp on crutches, and subsequently set his sights on Mount Kilimanjaro, which he climbed in 2024 using a KAFO device.

This journey led him to collaborate with Bionic Power, a Canadian company, and Thuasne, a French firm, to develop the SpryStep Agilik KAFO. This innovative device, featuring motors and sensors, enhances his ability to walk and is crucial for his upcoming expeditions. McAnsh is currently training on Vancouver's Grouse Grind, testing the limits of the Agilik technology as he prepares for his ultimate goal: summiting Mount Everest in 2028.

The Agilik device represents a significant advancement in assistive technology, offering a lighter and more responsive alternative to older exoskeleton-like systems. While expensive, with costs potentially reaching US$30,000 to US$40,000 in the U.S. and eligible for insurance reimbursement in some countries, Canada lacks a streamlined reimbursement pathway. McAnsh is currently sponsored by Bionic Power and Thuasne, enabling his pursuit of extreme challenges.

His efforts not only push personal boundaries but also serve to raise awareness about the existence and potential of such technologies for individuals with mobility impairments. McAnsh's data from extreme tests, like climbing the Grouse Grind, provides invaluable feedback for improving future iterations of the Agilik, with a specialized model planned for his Everest attempt. His ambition, fueled by a childhood dream, is to demonstrate that with willpower and the right technology, seemingly insurmountable limits can be overcome.
