Children's Wishes, a Plymouth-based charity, is celebrating the fifth year of its 'Operation Santa,' an initiative aimed at alleviating the Christmas burden for families facing hardship. This year, the charity has successfully raised over £20,000, a significant sum that will enable them to deliver gifts and essential hampers to more than 600 children across Devon and Cornwall.
The 'Operation Santa' campaign focuses on supporting families who may be experiencing poverty, dealing with terminal illness within the household, or have been affected by domestic abuse. Co-founder Caroline Wilson noted a substantial increase in families lacking basic Christmas essentials like trees, decorations, presents, and food, emphasizing the critical need for support this holiday season.
A 'big wrap' event saw over 100 volunteers and school staff gather at Plymouth Argyle's Home Park stadium to prepare the donated gifts. These presents are now being distributed to ensure children can enjoy them on Christmas Day, bringing much-needed joy and relief to vulnerable families during this festive period.
