A community garden on Onion Lake Cree Nation has become a vital hub for learning, healing, and sustenance. Through the dedicated efforts of local residents, the garden successfully produced over 1,300 kilograms of fresh vegetables this year, distributing the bounty to community members and two local food banks.
The initiative began three years ago in response to concerns about poor access to healthy foods and children's lack of familiarity with nutritious options. An early, smaller garden served as a teaching space, but this year saw an expansion focused on root vegetables.
Adopting a no-till gardening method, inspired by a free online course, proved transformative. This technique significantly lessened the workload and improved weed suppression, water retention, and overall soil health, making the garden more self-sufficient.
The project also created meaningful opportunities for community engagement and healing. Clients from the Ekweskeet Healing Lodge participated in garden maintenance, finding the experience deeply therapeutic and a chance to build connections outside of their recovery journeys.
Students from Sakāskohc High School also contributed, learning hands-on harvesting skills and teamwork while helping to provide food for families. This experience fostered a sense of pride and community giving among the young volunteers.
