Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic's surge in US food insecurity, model Olivia Culpo launched More Than a Mask in May 2020. This charitable initiative, a collaboration with Reunited Clothing, featured non-medical fashion masks sold online for $20.
The first month's sales exclusively benefited Feeding America, with each mask purchase contributing 100 meals. Culpo stated her intention to innovate while helping those in need, highlighting the pandemic's severe impact on children's access to food.
Later, Culpo partnered with Express for the #ExpressTogether campaign, which donated $10 to Feeding America for every face covering sold through August 2020. By 2021, her initiative had facilitated over 1.5 million meals.
The More Than a Mask program also expanded its philanthropic reach by collaborating with organizations like Colour of Change for racial justice and PERIOD to combat period poverty, further addressing diverse needs.
Culpo attributes her philanthropic drive to her parents' influence, recalling their tradition of 'adopting' families and volunteering at soup kitchens. Her past advocacy includes supporting breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and AIDS/HIV awareness, and working with amfAR.
She has also engaged with Pencils of Promise to enhance children's education and serves as a global ambassador for Best Buddies International, promoting inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
