New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, 34, shared an unusual incident from his participation in the 2024 New York City Marathon. Mamdani, who also ran in 2022, detailed accepting a cigarette from a spectator at the 10-mile mark in Greenpoint.
He described his race performance as good by his standards until that point. However, after the smoke break, his pace declined, confessing, "the rest of the race went downhill pretty quickly." His finishing time for the 2024 marathon was 5:38:10, an improvement from his 2022 time of 6:04:52, despite the detrimental effect of the cigarette.
Mamdani expressed his love for the marathon, highlighting its ability to unite New Yorkers from all boroughs. He appreciates the collective spirit, stating that crossing the finish line feels like the entire city is with you.
Since his inauguration on January 1st, the mayor has had limited time for running, managing only a few miles every few weeks. Despite this, he has engaged in running-related political activities, collaborating with New York Road Runners for the new 2-K child care program. This partnership involves a two-kilometer race, the 2K for 2K, scheduled for June 7th to promote the program.
