Couple's Legacy: 180,000 Backpacks for NYC Homeless

A Queens couple's profound dedication to New York City's homeless population continues to resonate following their recent passing. Jayson Conner and Jeffrey Newman, who began their mission in 2018, distributed more than 180,000 backpacks brimming with essential supplies.

Their initiative, 'Backpacks for the Street,' originated from a simple observation: unhoused individuals often lacked containers for their belongings. What began with a few donated backpacks and supplies quickly grew into a large-scale operation involving volunteers and a moving van, delivering goods weekly.

Conner, who had experienced homelessness himself, and Newman meticulously planned the contents of each backpack, considering specific needs like toiletries, socks, and even protein-rich snacks. They trained volunteers on compassionate engagement, fostering human connection alongside material aid.

The couple died within days of each other in late June and early July 2026. Their nonprofit, Together Helping Others, provided a wide range of social services, with the backpack program becoming a significant focus. Discussions are underway to sustain the initiative.
