An American cheddar has achieved remarkable international recognition at the 2025 World Cheese Awards. Stockinghall, a cave-aged cheddar from New York, secured an impressive fifth place in a competition dominated by European producers. This victory also earned it trophies for best American cheese and best cheddar, marking a significant achievement for U.S. cheesemaking.
The award-winning Stockinghall cheddar is crafted at Old Chatham Creamery in Groton, New York, by head cheesemaker Jeremiah Timmins, utilizing a recipe refined through Cornell University research. The cheese is then aged and distributed by Murray's Cheese, whose president highlighted the dedication of their team in developing distinctive American cheese flavors.
While Stockinghall shone, the ultimate world champion title went to a Swiss cheese, Le Gruyère AOP Vorderfultigen Spezial. The raw-milk Gruyère, praised for its complexity and rich flavor, has won the top prize multiple times. The competition featured over 5,000 entries from 46 countries, showcasing a broad spectrum of global cheese artistry.
