A new housing development in Nottinghamshire is adopting street names steeped in local folklore, most notably 'Pancake Way' and 'Denmark Road'. These names commemorate a 9th-century tale where local women allegedly used pancakes and frying pans to ward off invading Vikings. The development at Top Wighay farm, near Hucknall and Linby, will eventually include 763 homes, with a portion designated as affordable housing.
The naming scheme also pays tribute to miners from the former Linby Colliery. Historical advisor Gareth Howell praised the initiative, stating that such stories foster identity and civic pride, keeping local legends alive for future generations. This project combines modern housing needs with a celebration of regional heritage.
The Top Wighay site is also becoming home to Nottinghamshire County Council's new £19m headquarters, underscoring the area's significance. The proposed street names reflect a desire to connect the new community with its unique historical narratives, ensuring that tales like the pancake-wielding defenders are not forgotten.
