In Norfolk, Virginia, a new nonprofit, 'Take Back Our Children' (TBOC), is leveraging music to empower local youth and address gun violence. Dr. Sesil Jenkins, who identifies as a protégé of Marvin Gaye, established TBOC in memory of his cousin, Sierra Jenkins, a reporter tragically killed in downtown Norfolk in 2022. TBOC recently hosted a youth music and media workshop at Tidewater Community College, a location near where Sierra Jenkins lost her life.
This initiative provides creative outlets in music and technology, offering alternatives to traditional activities. Project manager William T. Starzz highlighted that the curriculum fosters entrepreneurship and community building. Students are learning to use state-of-the-art recording technology and build mobile studios, enabling them to create and distribute music globally. TBOC is working to expand its reach through partnerships with local colleges and recreation centers.
