For 83 years, the village of Nandagad has proudly upheld a distinctive 'One Village, One Ganesha' tradition, a practice that began in 1944. This unique celebration involves installing a single Ganesha idol for the entire community at Bazaar Peth, fostering remarkable unity among residents. This year, a 5-foot idol crafted by local artisans was central to the festivities, drawing thousands of devotees from nearby regions and the neighboring states of Goa and Maharashtra.
The 10-day festival, organized by the Ganesh Mandali, featured a diverse array of cultural, religious, and awareness programs. Notably, the immersion procession eschews modern loud music like DJ or Dolby systems. Instead, it is accompanied by traditional instruments played by the local Koravi community, reinforcing the village's commitment to its heritage. Elders emphasize that the festival transcends boundaries of caste, creed, language, and religion, with a history of peaceful celebrations.
This established tradition has inspired other villages; during a former MLA's tenure, the 'One Village, One Ganesha' concept was adopted by 50 additional villages. The emphasis on community participation and traditional observance continues to be a hallmark of Nandagad's Ganeshotsav, promoting harmony and cultural preservation.
