In August 2024, Michigan couple Thomas and Kristin Fletcher took a significant risk by purchasing a house at a tax auction for $20,000 without seeing it. This initial gamble led them to a major DIY renovation project, driven by their desire to transform a run-down property.
Upon winning the bid, they discovered the house needed extensive work, including clearing out two years' worth of stored food and garbage. Despite these challenges, they were relieved to find the structure sound and utilities functional. The couple invested just under $35,000 into the remodel, bringing the total cost to under $55,000.
Thomas, known as "Fletch," undertook the majority of the demanding renovation work himself over eight months, often during the Michigan winter, while Kristin was pregnant and later caring for their newborn son. They even moved into the partially renovated house to manage the project and family life.
By May 2025, their transformed property, situated on 2 acres, was completed and named "The Comeback Cabin." It officially opened as a rental property in August 2025. The Fletchers have since acquired another auction property for $8,500, ready for another ambitious renovation.
The Fletchers emphasize that their success was built on sweat equity and smart choices, proving that significant transformations are possible without substantial budgets or hired help. "The Comeback Cabin" is now valued at ten times its original purchase price.
