Theme Park Reimagined for All Abilities
28 Oct
Summary
- Park designed for inclusivity, not just spectacle.
- Features 25 acres with 25 original attractions.
- Free admission for guests with special needs.
Morgan's Wonderland, a pioneering Ultra-Accessible theme park in San Antonio, Texas, opened its doors on April 10, 2010. Founded by Gordon Hartman, the park was inspired by his daughter's experience of exclusion from playgrounds. This 25-acre facility was conceived to provide a less bustling environment than typical amusement parks, ensuring that families with disabled children could enjoy shared experiences.
The park initially featured 25 core attractions and has since undergone significant expansion. In 2024, Morgan's Wonderland unveiled a $6.5 million expansion, adding four new attractions such as a 4D Magic Cinema and a zip line. Daily attendance is capped to maintain a calm atmosphere and short lines, with free admission offered to guests with special needs.
Over its 16 years of operation, Morgan's Wonderland has welcomed over 3.8 million guests from all 50 states and 123 countries. This demonstrates a significant rise from its first decade, which saw 1.6 million visitors from 73 countries. The park's success highlights a growing need for inclusive recreational spaces.
Research into inclusive playground design underscores the importance of such initiatives. A 2023 review identified gaps in existing auditing tools, noting that most focused on physical inclusion and few addressed sensory or social barriers. Morgan's Wonderland, however, was designed for shared enjoyment, allowing disabled and non-disabled visitors to experience rides together.
