The Prince's Palace in Monaco recently featured a striking visual display, illuminated in brilliant blue for World Drowning Prevention Day. This event underscored Princess Charlene's commitment to water safety initiatives. The former Olympic swimmer has made combating drowning a central cause, a mission driven by profound personal loss.

Princess Charlene disclosed that the tragedy of her five-year-old cousin, Richard, drowning in a river during her childhood deeply affects her. She stated that the pain from this loss remains. This experience reinforced her understanding that drownings devastate entire families, not just the victims.

Further reinforcing her resolve, a second heartbreaking incident involved the drowning of a close friends' 19-month-old daughter in 2018. This event solidified Charlene's determination to promote water safety. She prioritizes teaching her own twins, Jacques and Gabriella, water confidence and safety from a young age.

Through the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, established in 2012, she has dedicated over a decade to ensuring children globally receive swimming lessons and water safety education. The foundation partners with various organizations to provide these vital programs.
